As a crochet teacher, I have folks that come to me with projects that have become what I call the "great blanket pyramid." It starts out the right size but with every succeeding row, it gets smaller and smaller making it look like a "pyramid" instead of a square. Here is a simple solution to a seemingly tough problem. The reason your project is becoming a pyramid is because you are missing crocheting into the last stitch (which is the beginning chain on your previous row). When you come to your turning chain from the previous row, the top of the chain seems to disappear and you can't tell that you haven't crocheted into it. Solution: When making your turning chain, place a stitch marker into the top of the chain. When you come to the end of your next row, you will find the stitch marker in the top of your chain and you will know where to put your last stitch thus avoiding the decreasing of stitches and accidentally creating the "Great Blanket Pyramid."
Hope this was helpful to someone starting out and having this problem. Post questions for any issues you may be having and let's see if we can find your solution.
